• This weekend the first round of the Porsche Sprint Trophy Benelux 2021
• On the program: two 30-minute Sprints and a 55-minute Long Race
• A nice battle is expected in both Cup Division and Clubsport Division
The time has come! One month after the official Test Day in Zolder, the participants in the Porsche Sprint Trophy Benelux will be on the Limburg circuit on 8 and 9 May for the start of the first race of the season. The field consists of a nice mix of gentlemen drivers and rookies of all ages. The first meeting, part of the New Race Festival, promises to be a great spectacle.
For the fifteen drivers who will be present this weekend, a busy schedule is on the agenda: they will be presented with no less than 200 minutes of track time, including two sprint races of 30 minutes and a Long Race of 55 minutes! It gives all riders the opportunity to fully experience their passion. For the young wolves who want to climb the pyramid of Porsche Motorsport as quickly as possible, this is also an excellent opportunity to gain a lot of experience.
Two categories, many contenders for the victory
As announced earlier this year, the Porsche Sprint Trophy Benelux consists of two classes: the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup 991 Gen I and Gen II drive in the Cup Division, and the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport in the Clubsport Division. Let's see who is at the start ...
In the first category, John de Wilde is one of the big favorites. The Team Speedlover driver was the fastest during the official test days at the beginning of April and has just had a successful weekend in the Porsche Carrera Cup Benelux: At Spa-Francorchamps he claimed a victory and a second place in Pro-Am. But beware: there are a lot of riders who want to put him to the test in Zolder! Then we think in the first place of his teammate at Speedlover, Gilles Smits. The driver from Wavre made an excellent debut in the Porsche championships last year, and is now resolutely aiming for the highest podium step. Besides these two Speedlover drivers we find Jos Janssen (JJ Racing), Stijn Lowette (NGT Racing) and the duo Wim Meulders-Rik Renmans (Speedlover). All drivers who can put solid arguments on the table. And then we should certainly not forget two ambitious rookies: Niels Troost (Team GP Elite), excellent second in the Test Day, and Lucas van Eijndhoven (JW Raceservice), who mainly wants to make progress in the Porsche Carrera Cup Benelux in the foreseeable future. In addition, there was is an extra registration to be noted: Régis Gosselin is determined to shuffle the cards even more. This former clapper from one-make eries with smaller cars hopes to be able to adapt quickly to the 911 GT3 Cup of the Belgian August Racing and thus contribute to the spectacle.
Spectacle, that will also be seen in the class reserved for the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport. In the front we will probably find the Dutchman Alex Goddijn (Team GP Elite). With the experience he gained last year, the reigning vice champion seems to be already ahead of the competition, including his teammates at GP Elite, his father Harold and team mate Ronald Bezuur. Another Dutchman, Tijn Jilesen (PG Motorsport), wants to impress in the Cayman, just like Benjamin Pâque (Speedlover). At the age of sixteen, the Liège kart - and son of Pierre-Yves, a well-known name in the Porsche championships - cherishes the ambition to immediately compete for podium places in his first season in motorsport. With the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport, he has in any case chosen the right car to learn the tricks of the trade as quickly as possible.
The Porsche Sprint Trophy Benelux, more than ever aimed at young people, rookies and gentlemen drivers, has perfectly reached its target audience at the start of the 2021 season. On the program this weekend: free practice sessions (at 10:10 AM and 11:15 AM), both qualifications (3:00 PM) and a first 30-minute Sprint race (5.15 PM) on Saturday, and the second Sprint of 30 minutes at 10:15 AM and the Long Race of 55 minutes at 4 pm on Sunday. The drivers will not be bored for a second this weekend!
